WikiLeaks
Who’s this guy?
What did he do?
What did he affect?
Why might this be important in relation to our topic ‘The Impact of New Technologies’
Learning Aim:
- To investigate the Wikileaks scandal, and explore and evaluate how it changed the media climate as we know it.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the lesson…
- All students will be able to explain who Jullian Assange is, his legacy on digital and citizen journalism, and evaluate the impact this had on both audiences and institutions.
This week you are going to watch Mr Rose’s edited cut of The Fifth Estate (a film about WikiLeaks) in order to investigate the impact Julian Assange and WikiLeaks had on journalism and news reporting.
- Before we do, what factors do we need to consider?
- Why is the fact we are watching a film relevant?
- Link argument to media language…
Joint Screening Task: Mk 2.0

UGC and Citizen Journalism
User Generated Content or UGC (add to glossary if not in)
Citizen Journalism (add to glossary if not in)
Also known as "public", "participatory","guerrilla" or "street" journalism.
Based upon public citizens playing an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing, and disseminating news and information.
An alternative and activist form of newsgathering functioning outside mainstream media institutions, often as a response to shortcomings in the professional journalistic field.
Due to New media technology, such as social networking and smart phones, citizens can sometimes report breaking news more quickly than traditional media reporters.
UGC and Citizen Journalism
Make a list of examples of UCG and/or Citizen Journalism from the news…
Also identify the methods used… what technologies and platforms could you use to create UGC?

Post Mock Feedback
General Feedback:
On a fresh page in your Section A Assessment Book, write
“Post Mock Exam REWRITE”
Write the question, and the prompts…
You will be shown each media text ONE FINAL TIME EACH.
Be prepared to write a PEE paragraph straight after, using all the media language words provided.
You will then be given another set of media language words to write another PEE paragraph…
Consider how the two adverts use mise-en-scène to sell a lifestyle. (8 marks)
PEE paragraph 1 could talk about PROPS
“Mise-en-scene is used in various ways in the two texts.”
POINT - “One instance is the use of PROPS.”
EXAMPLE -
EXPLANATION / EVALUATION -
PEE paragraph 2 could talk about LOCATION
PEE paragraph 3 could talk about COSTUME
PEE paragraph 4 could talk about BODY LANG
PEE paragraph 5 could talk about LIGHTING
Gaming culture is often represented negatively. How is this being challenged? You may also refer to other media products to support your answer. (12 marks)
Make notes on a potential paragraph for each of these concepts…
VIOLENCE (CULTIVATION THEORY)
Write a PEE paragraph about the issue of HEALTH CRITICISMS
Write a PEE paragraph about the issue of SOCIAL PROBLEMS / ADDICTION
Write a PEE paragraph about the benefit of EDUCATIONAL ISSUES
Provide examples of other media texts. (media issues to talk about, cultivation theory, hypodermic needle, two step flow, moral panic, participation culture, remix culture, prosumer, Manovich, Gauntlett, Jenkins, technological convergence)
PLAN
One way the texts challenge the usual criticisms of gaming culture, is the lack of violence. Many texts have been criticised for desensitising audiences to violence, such as Call of Duty or Fallout. In the texts, we see individuals of all ages, participating in games that do not involve guns or shooting, and as such do not rely on the connotations of destruction or violence that the narrative of these games usually focus on.
Linking to that, both texts feature individuals sharing this experience in groups, which contrasts the usual criticism that gamers are isolated, and lack social skills. The DJ text in particular showed a large group of peers injecting energy and enthusiasm into their life, which suggests creativity and activity rather than laziness and isolation.
Why do media institutions celebrate new technology to market their products? You should refer to other media products to support your answer. (12 marks)

TECHNOLOGICAL CONVERGENCE
Provide examples of other media texts.
(Think Apple, Deadpool, Vine, Netflix, YouTube, Samsung, Sky, E4, BBC3, The Hobbit, the cinema, 3D etc, ideology, connotations, aspirations, beliefs, image, promotion, trends, Manovich, Gauntlett, Jenkins)
- Have stamina - don’t exhaust everything you know on the first question
- Answer the actual question - read the key words. Many wrote some good PEE paragraph points, that did not focus on mise-en-scene, and therefore did not answer the question)
- Media Language must be used more frequently, and confidently. It is literally what you get marks for. It’s how you show AQA you know what you are talking about.
- Media Theorists to support points. As above.
- Provide own examples other than those in the texts, especially in Q2 and 3. This wasn't as hard as it seemed, with many of you confidently bringing Netflix of Apple into answers.
- Evaluate - crucial for Q2 and 3. It is in the Mark Scheme. Purposefully argue against the question, just to make a point.
- DONT BE AFRAID OF THE PEE PARAGRAPH
